ABOUT SUMITHRAYO
On the 15th of June 2010, Sumithrayo completed 36 years of their befriending services in Sri Lanka. Set up in 1974 by the late Mrs. Joan de Mel and incorporated by the Act of Parliament N0.10 of 1986, Sri Lanka Sumithrayo has set up branches to cope with community needs islandwide. Sumithrayo specialise in giving emotional support. The primary purpose of Sumithrayo is to give emotional support to people when they are suicidal.

The Act of Incorporation set out the following objectives.
- To render assistance to persons in despair or distress.
- To provide solace, friendship, guidance and relief to persons in distress or despair.
- To assist in rehabilitation of those who find themselves in a helpless state and seek help to lead a fruitful way of life.
- To establish branches of the corporation in Sri Lanka.
Branches function under the umbrella of the Council of Management of Sri Lanka Sumithrayo at which all registered branches are given equal representation.
