Set up in 1984 to cope with the increasing problem of drug use in the country. Analysis of the data available at the Colombo branch indicated a high incidence of alcohol and heroin use. Subsequently steps were taken by the Colombo branch to set up this special unit to cater to this need.

Unlike the volunteer workers who support the branches, Mel Medura has a complement of full time paid staff. They are trained to help persons who are experiencing difficulties arising from drug use as well as to introduce a wide range of steps to minimize the social value placed on drug use.
