The Befriending service is maintained through a cadre of over 450 volunteers attached to the various branches. Sumithrayo are Befrienders and not Counsellors. While the volunteers are trained to give emotional support and empower those in distress to cope with their pressing issues, they are not referred to as Counsellors. Training is of the essence. Discipline is the corner stone on which the service has been built. Volunteers who are busy but know how to manage their time, and feel they should also care for others besides themselves are welcome to apply to a branch closest to their own home. If they meet with the criteria for selection, after initial training, volunteers who are found to be suitable are registered with the branch and work under the supervision of senior volunteers. Confidentiality and anonymity are two vital disciplines of the service and registered volunteers who are found wanting in these areas, are dismissed after due inquiry.
Selection criteria includes
* A high level of empathy (a balanced head and heart approach)
* Good coping skills
* Management of time
* Dual language skills.
* Personal discipline.
Persons who fit into the above profile may write to the organization and offer their voluntary services. This results in a personal interview and admission for training if the applicant is found to be suitable.
